Missoula's Hip Strip Public Engagement

The Hip Strip expansion public engagement project centers on extending parking management practices into the Hip Strip—a vibrant corridor known for its unique boutiques, eateries, and entertainment venues.

Grounded in insights from a comprehensive parking study, the expansion project seeks to address persistent challenges including high occupancy rates, limited turnover, and accessibility gaps. Through a data-informed approach to rate-setting and enforcement, the project aims to better align parking supply with demand—enhancing traffic circulation, pedestrian safety, and economic vitality throughout the district.

With the initial phase of public engagement now complete, the project continues to prioritize community input. Feedback from residents, business owners, and stakeholders is actively shaping a parking system that reflects Missoula’s values and supports the Hip Strip’s dynamic urban character.

Following data collection and community engagement, MPC is proceeding with recommending the Hip-Strip expansion to City Council. This map (click image to the right) illustrates the expansion area, outlined in green and filled with a teal and pink stripe.

Once the expansion is approved, we will begin patrolling the area twice daily, Monday through Friday, between 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM. Parking officers will enforce safety violations and existing signage, including 2-hour time-limited parking signs and no parking signs. This enforcement will coincide with additional data collection and public engagement regarding parking management strategies.

The initial public engagement window for the Hip Strip parking expansion project closed on July 1, 2025. While the comment period has ended, the interactive map (click image to the left) remains available for viewing.
