Project Description

The purpose of this project is to identify solutions for stormwater issues in the Lincolnwood and Lincoln Hills neighborhoods in the Rattlesnake Creek area of Missoula.

Project Goals & Community Benefits

Based on conversations with citizens and descriptions in the City’s 2025 Comprehensive Stormwater Quality Plan, we understand that there are various stormwater issues within the subject neighborhoods. The neighborhoods lack sufficient drainage infrastructure, resulting in frequent ponding and localized flooding. There are also very few existing stormwater quality treatment measures that service the area.

The primary purposes of this project are to

  • Assess the issues
  • Develop alternatives
  • And select a preferred solution for each of the two neighborhoods.

Funding Source

The funding sources for this project are from the Department of Commerce Montana Coal Endowment Program and the Department of Natural Resources and Conservation Renewable Resource Grant Program.

Project Timeline

September 2025 to March 2026

Public Meeting

On May 7, 2026, The City of Missoula held public meeting about the Lincoln Hills & Lincolnwood Engineering Analysis at the Rattlesnake Elementary School – Gym/Cafeteria (Room 405).

At this meeting, the project team presented the final alternatives under consideration for each neighborhood. These alternatives reflect technical analysis and earlier community feedback. Attendees learned about the options and share input that will help guide the selection of a preferred alternative.

The meeting will included a short presentation followed by time for questions and feedback. The presentation highlighted each alternative with clear graphics and brief summaries.

Comments received during the meeting will help inform the final project recommendations and will be summarized in the Preliminary Engineering Report (PER).

Does this include Sunflower Drive? Our storm water backs up badly as well

Carrie Sweatland asked 2 months ago

Thank you for reaching out, Carrie. This analysis does not include Sunflower Drive, it is limited to the Lincoln Hills and Lincolnwood subdivisions.

The City installed two new drywells on Sunflower Drive last year in August of 2025. We have not received any complaints since then, so we thought the issue was resolved. If you are continuing to have drainage concerns, please consider reporting them online at https://experience.arcgis.com/experience/d33a082875124359a35a0d5d24a6cdd3, or call 406-552-6379.

    Respectfully,

    Tracy
