The Signal Optimization project elemeng includes upgrading signal detection, controllers, and other hardware as well as conducting analysis and optimization of the entire downtown signal system. This part of the project has two main parts: signal modification and automated traffic signal performance measures (ATSPM) upgrades.

The signal modifications component involves upgrading the signals directly on Higgins Ave, Front St, and Main St. These signals will be designed to align with the new lane configurations, protected bike lanes, and intersection layouts associated with the corridor changes to each of these roadways.

The signal ATSPM upgrades expand beyond just these three roadways and will encompass 15 additional signals in the Downtown Missoula area. These upgrades will involve installing equipment on the signals that will allow collection and analysis of high-resolution data to optimize signal timing and improve the overall system performance in the downtown area. These upgrades will not only help in the near term but will allow tracking of this data in the future to determine how to keep the signal timing and performance optimized.
